AMITE, La. (AP) State police are investigating a shooting death involving Tangipahoa Parish sheriff's deputies.
Sheriff Daniel Edwards says 49-year-old David Johnson was shot Sunday night in Amite.
Edwards said officer responded to a disturbance and found Johnson in his yard armed with a shotgun.
After a brief standoff, Edwards said a female came running from the woods and began struggling with Johnson. Edwards said deputies then attempted to disarm Johnson. During the struggle, he said Johnson regained control of the weapon and pointed it at a deputy who had fallen to the ground. Edwards said other deputies shot at Johnson hitting him the pelvic area.
Edwards said Johnson died early Monday morning at St. Tammany Parish Hospital.
