Baton Rouge - In the spirit of preparing for the worse and hoping for the best, the Louisiana State Police senior staff held a command briefing this afternoon in the LSP Emergency Operation Center at Headquarters in Baton Rouge.
The Louisiana State Police EOC is staffed to monitor storm developments and act as a liaison to GOHSEP and other state agency stake holders. All southern Troop Commanders have been in contact with Parish OEPs, Sheriffs and Chiefs in their areas of responsibility for situational awareness.
Although the latest information from the National Weather Service is favorable for our state, Tropical Storm Debby should serve as a reminder that the 2012 Hurricane Season has begun. The Louisiana State Police reminds all citizens of the importance of being prepared and having a plan in place to ensure your personal and family safety.
Know the meaning and the difference between a hurricane watch and a hurricane warning:
· Hurricane Watch: conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch, usually within 36 hours.
· Hurricane Warning: conditions are expected in the specified area of the warning, usually within 24 hours.
Make a personal and/or family plan by putting together the following items:
· Flashlight
· Extra batteries in needed/various sizes
· Battery-Powered radio and lantern
· Bottled water (at least three gallons per person)
· Canned food and non-electric can opener
· First Aid Kit and essential medications
· Personal Items (clothes, rain gear, compass, tape, garbage bags, toiletries)
· Personal Identification and other important documents
· Evacuation route maps
· Remember to protect family, pets, home and valuables.
Get a Game Plan Now! Identify ahead of time where you will go if you are required to evacuate (choose several options). Make sure your vehicle has been inspected and/or serviced and has a full tank of gasoline. This will alleviate possible vehicle problems while you are traveling. Monitor the National Weather Service, local radio and TV stations for evacuation instructions. Please remember, Contraflow is the evacuation of last resort! If advised to evacuate, do so immediately!
