LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A state judge has ordered the state Public Defender Board to give the Calcasieu Parish Public Defenders Office $200,000 to help the office fund indigent defense.
District Judge Wilford Carter, also ordered a stay of prosecution in Andrew Kyle's theft and battery cases until funding for expenses in his defense can be found.
Carter ordered the local board to submit a request in writing to the state board for funds.
But Frank Nuner, head of the Public Defender Board, said he questioned the legality of the order since no one from the board was at Tuesday's hearing and since the hearing did not take place in East Baton Rouge Parish, where the board's headquarters is located.
