BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The state Republican Party says it's launching an anti-tobacco tax ad Friday on radio stations around Louisiana.
According to a script released by the GOP, former U.S. Rep. Bob Livingston narrates the 30-second ad, which urges people to call their lawmakers and tell them to vote against a proposal to raise the state cigarette tax.
Livingston calls the $120 million tax measure "fiscally irresponsible" and a threat to Louisiana's small businesses.
Supporters call it a bid to improve people's health by discouraging smoking, while also raising state revenue.
The proposal by Democratic Rep. Harold Ritchie, of Bogalusa, would raise the cigarette tax from 36 cents per pack to $1.06. It faces significant opposition among House leaders and isn't expected to get the two-thirds support needed to pass the Legislature.
