BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Education has certified three schools in five locations as world language immersion schools.
They are the International School of Louisiana, which has two campuses in New Orleans and one in Metairie, and two schools in Baton Rouge - Westdale Middle School and the Baton Rouge Foreign Language Academic Immersion Magnet.
The new certification was approved by the 2013 Legislature. It's based on overall excellence in offering high-quality, highly-effective world language immersion learning and teaching.
Under criteria developed by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, teachers at these schools must be as fluent as native speakers of the language, teaching both the written and spoken language, with high-quality time in which students speak only the foreign language.
