Stage Set for April Elections

Qualifying has ended for the April special election. Although many of the races have been decided because only one candidate qualified, several other high-profile races will be on next month's ballot.

Two towns will select new mayors. In Jennings, Terry Duhon and Marcus Peterson are running for the city's top job. In Grand Coteau, interim Mayor Virginia Pierre and Mayor Pro Temp Shaterral Johnson are vying for the mayor's office. The winner will fill the unexpired term of Henry Pierre, who died last year. Virginia Pierre, Henry's wife, was appointed to hold the office until the election.

Two school board elections will be held to fill vacancies left by board members who were recently elected to other offices. In Acadia Parish, Blane Harmon and David Lalande will compete for the District 5 seat formerly held by current Rayne mayor Roland Boudreaux. In Iberia Parish, Thomas Jolivet and Zeb Simon are running for the seat vacated when Raymond "Shoe-Do" Lewis was elected to the New Iberia City Council.

In Gueydan, residents will select and at-large alderman. Marilyn Campbell and Angela Touchet are running for the office.

In Mermentau, no one qualified in the chief of police race. According to state law, the qualifying period for this office will be reopened Wednesday. This qualifying period will continue until Friday at 5:00 P. M.
