COVINGTON, La. (AP) - Due to the dry and windy conditions in St. Tammany Parish, Parish President Kevin Davis and Chief of Fire Services John O'Neill have issued a 30 day burn ban.
Over the last 30 days, the parish's various fire districts have responded to over 230 backyard fires which have gotten out of control as a result of the dry and windy conditions.
The Fire Index Map for the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry has the parishes of St. Tammany and Washington in the "Very High" risk zone.
Davis says if they can limit the number of backyard fires, that would allow the parish to free up personnel and resources to handle more serious emergencies.
