The St. Mary Parish School Board voted to join other school districts in the lawsuit to stop state-funded scholarships for students who want to leave lower performing public schools to attend higher performing private schools. Also, the lawsuit challenges the constitutionality of using public dollars in private schools. The state voucher program is for students who are from low- to moderate-income families and who attend public schools that earned a C, D or F under the state's school accountability program.
The lawsuit challenges Act 2, and so far Louisiana Federation of Teachers, Louisiana Association of Educators, and the Iberia Parish School Board, among other school districts in Louisiana, have already joined the lawsuit.
