According to St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert, during the last 24 hour reporting period the Sheriff's Office responded to 45 complaints and reports the following arrests:
Jerry Copeland, 55, 227 Southeast Blvd. #8, Bayou Vista, LA was arrested on July 23, 2013 at 11:29 am on 8 warrants for issuing worthless checks. While responding to a report in the Bayou Vista area, a deputy made contact with Copeland and learned of the warrants for multiple counts of issuing worthless checks. Copeland was released on a summons to appear in court on October 9, 2013.
Nigel Irvin Lagarde, 28, 761 Utah Street Lot #11, Berwick, LA was arrested on July 23, 2013 at 12:37 pm on a warrant for failure to register as a sex offender. Lagarde turned himself in at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office in Morgan City after learning of the warrant for his arrest. Lagarde was transported to the parish jail for booking and incarceration. No bond is set.
Chucky J. Verdun, 41, 1213 Main Street, Patterson, LA was arrested on July 23, 2013 at 6:59 pm on a warrant for criminal neglect of family. A deputy investigating a complaint of a disturbance on Ryan Street in the Patterson area made contact with Verdun and discovered the warrant for his arrest. Verdun was transported to the parish jail for booking and incarceration. Bond is set at $7,978.89.
April A. Tipton, 26, 106 Southeast Blvd., Bayou Vista, LA was arrested on July 24, 2013 at 1:09 am for domestic abuse battery, domestic abuse child endangerment, disturbing the peace intoxicated, and resisting an officer. A deputy responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on Southeast Blvd. During the course of the investigation, the deputy learned that a verbal argument between Tipton and a male subject escalated into a physical encounter when Tipton struck a male victim in the face. The deputy observed the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Tipton's breath. As the deputy attempted to effect an arrest, Tipton used a 5 year old child as a barrier. At one point, Tipton squeezed the child causing him to cry out. The child was not injured during the incident. The juvenile was released to a guardian. Tipton was transported to the parish jail for booking and incarceration. No bond is set.
The following arrest was made in the early morning hours of July 23, 2013.
Lawanda D. Johnson, 37, 148 Jones Road #2, Jeanerette, LA was arrested on July 23, 2013 at 4:08 am for careless operation of a motor vehicle and possession of open alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle. A deputy responded to a report of a vehicle crash on Highway 83 in the Baldwin area. Upon arrival, the deputy was advised by emergency responders that the driver was transported to the hospital as a precaution. During the deputy's investigation of the crash, he determined that the vehicle was travelling north on Highway 83 when the driver crossed the median, struck the guardrail, left the roadway, and struck a tree. The deputy located a can of beer inside the vehicle. Contact was made with the driver, who was identified as Johnson. After further investigation, Johnson was released on a summons to appear in court on October 9, 2013.
