St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert Congratulates Academy Graduates

St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert presented graduation certificates to the 53rd session of the POST Basic Law Enforcement Academy on Thursday.

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office Regional Training Academy prepares cadets to meet the many challenges facing today's law enforcement officers by teaching and training to high standards of professionalism in policing.

Under the instruction of Academy Director Captain Brian P. Charpentier, the 14 graduates completed 14 weeks of rigorous law enforcement training. Among the extensive curriculum and certification programs are criminal and traffic law, ethics and standards of conduct, first aid and CPR, crisis intervention, crime prevention, defensive tactics, firearms training, and physical conditioning. Cadets are also taught the value of respect, selfless service, and integrity.

The 3 and ½ months of training culminated with the administration of the Louisiana Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) test. The 14 cadets successfully completed the basic training academy and passed the POST test allowing them to graduate with the new certifications.

During the graduation ceremony held at the Forest Restaurant in Franklin, Sheriff Hebert told graduates to trust and rely on their academy training and the knowledge and experience shared by the instructors. "In a time of crisis you will revert to that training." Hebert also thanked those who attended the ceremony for supporting the graduates. "Family and faith are a vital part of being a successful law enforcement officer."

Deputy Heidi Sampey received the Top Gun Award for the highest average score in firearm performance.

Deputy Bobby Glynn, Jr. received the Top Athlete Award for the highest average score in athletic performance.

Deputy Jamie Moore was presented with the John Kahl Sr. Award of Excellence. This award is presented to a deputy who achieves the highest academic average.
