St. Mary Parish in process of closing courthouse jail

The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office will have the jail in the St. Mary Parish Courthouse closed within a month. The jail is in Franklin located on the seventh floor of the courthouse, but because of budget cuts, Sheriff Mark Hebert supported shutting it down for good. The 115-bed jail houses male and female inmates, some of who are state inmates held for the Department of Corrections.

The parish, though, is housing fewer inmates, hence receiving less money from the state. The Sheriff's Office is expecting up to a $700,000 savings in salaries and operational costs, according to St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Traci Landry. No personnel will be laid off. Rather, they'll be used in other areas.

Female prisoners including female DOC inmates will be moved to the Morgan City Jail. Male DOC inmates will be relocated to the main jail in Centerville.
