The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a jury duty text message practical joke. "The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office received calls from several individuals who received the text messages and called the St. Mary Parish Courthouse directly instead of contacting the number in the text," Public Information Officer Traci Landry said. The text message says to call 704-319-7254 for skipping out on jury duty then the caller hears an urgent message with an option to pay a $500 fine or go to jail for 30 days for failing to respond to text messages and emails regarding jury duty. "Near the end of the message, the caller is provided a third option revealing the text message as a practical joke," Landry said.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office wants the public to know it never sends texts or emails to notify potential jurors.
