The St. Martinville City Government will soon write off overdue utility bills from its books.
The city council voted last week to write off nearly $30,000 in uncollected utility fees. According to Mayor Thomas Nelson, that's the lowest amount the city has had to write off since he took office in 2006.
Nelson says more people have been able to pay their bills on time since the council changed the due date of utility bills from the 25th of the month to the 4th. Nelson says this allowed the poorer residents in town to pay their bills on time since most of them get paid on or around the first of each month.
Nelson says 42 St. Martinville residents have outstanding bills, which range from $34 to $1500. Residents with overdue bills will now be referred to a collection agency.
