St. Martinville tannery hosting gators bounty contest

A St. Martinville tannery is offering a $10,000 bounty for the largest alligator caught during gator season.

Chris Plotts of American Tagging and Leather says the company last offered a bounty in 2007. He says it is not an annual event because he doesn't want it to become mundane.

According to Plotts, his company will buy anywhere between $6,000 and $8,000 of alligator hide this season, paying $10 to $40 per foot depending on the quality.

Hunters entering the contest must present the proper state-issued alligators tags when presenting their kills for sale.

Alligator season begins today.
