The city of St. Martinville is cracking down on loitering and people gathering and drinking in the streets.
The mayor and police department discussed the problem at Monday night's city council meeting, including a two-day fight that took place between two families a week ago.
It happened on Gov. Mouton and Martin Luther King Street last Sunday and Monday. The crowd got so out of control police had to use tear gas to break up the fight. Nearly 10 people were arrested following the street brawl.
Neighbors in the area said this isn't the first time groups have disturbed the peace on this street corner.
"This neighborhood needs to be cleaned up, it's gone too far. Somebody is going to get hurt bad or somebody going to get killed," said Martha Pierre.
Mayor Thomas Nelson said the City will begin enforcing laws already on the books regarding loitering, drinking and congregating of people on City streets.
