St. Martin Parish to cut teachers

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (AP) - The last-minute appearance of
roughly $1 million has averted a crisis for St. Martin Parish's public schools, but teachers, students and administrators will still have to do more with less.
The Advertiser reports the school system, which serves roughly 8,500 students, was facing a $4.6 million deficit for the upcoming 2011-12 school year.
But school board members learned this week that a recalculation of the Minimum Foundation Program, the portion of the local budget supplied by the state, has resulted in the system getting an extra
$968,216.
To close the rest of the budget hole, the school board voted Wednesday evening to eliminate 16 teachers; eliminate two French immersion program teachers; cut the central office staff by two positions; and cut school operating funds by $1 million.
