In her first week on the job, Dr. Lottie Beebe (the new superintendent of St. Martin Parish Schools) is planning on making some big changes.
But she says the real "change" needs to happen at the state level.
The newly hired superintendent and current member of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has been going toe-to-toe with state superintendent John White.
Their disagreement is over the hiring of local teachers versus those with "Teach for America".
Beebe feels that local talents are being passed over for those from TFA.
A teacher for 13 years herself, she's making plans to keep both students and teachers in the classroom.
She attributes the mass exodus of teachers to a lack of discipline.
"So as superintendent I pledge to focus on discipline, and to ensure that we have classrooms that are safe and that promote learning", says Beebe.
To help assist in that refocusing, Beebe has created a new "Supervisor of Organizational Structures" position.
