St. Martin Parish rounded up parents not paying child support. "I ain't working right now. I've got a hurt back i've been disabled since 1990,"said Cody Begnaud. Sherriff's deputies say Begnaud owes at least ten-thousand dollars in child support. "From time to time we do these sweeps as an effort to get money back for the kids,"said Ginny Higgins, Major in charge of Special Services. Deputies were knocking on doors and making as many arrests as possible. Three units set out to serve warrants across the parish. Everyone they're looking for owes their children 10,000 to 100,000 dollars. "The thing is it makes somebody accountable. Even if it's one, that's just one more child that has assistance that they didn't have before,"said Higgins. Once arrested and picked up they were taken to the St. Martin Parish Courthouse. If they don't come up with the money, they're booked and put behind bars. "If you're getting regular support, you can't depend on that or pay your bills accordingly and sometimes kids do go hungry,"said Family Court Hearing Officer Maggie Trahan Simar.
