The St. Martin Parish Council will appoint a new coroner tonight following the sudden resignation of Dr. Daniel Wiltz. According to Parish President Guy Cormier, Wiltz resigned effective immediately on April 2 after holding the position for nine years.
Wiltz, who also serves in the Armed Forces, tells KATC he needs a break from the position so he can focus on his private practice. "I loved what I did, and I think we did a lot of good things for the parish," he said. Wiltz says he is proud of his work setting up a computer database that tracks causes and manners of death to analyze connections and patterns between cases.
Cormier says the council will appoint Dr. Warren Degatur as the interim coroner. A special election will be held in October to fill the unexpired term.
