OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot says he is ordering parish-wide weed spraying beginning next week even though the council voted last week to rebid the parish contract.
Fontenot said spraying hasn't been done in the parish for the past three years and his decision to begin the weed control process is based on safety concerns.
Council attorney Lance Pitre said the council's decision to seek new bids for the contract should be honored.
However, Pitre said the $78,824 it will cost to spray more than 900 miles of parish roads is a professional service and the expenditure is not enough to fall under state bid law guidelines.
Fontenot challenged the council Wednesday to take him to court on the matter, adding he was sure he would win the case.
