St. Landry Parish now has a new registrar of voters after the former one retired after being arrested. John Moreau was arrested by Opelousas police for allegedly damaging the car of a fellow parish employee. He is being charged with criminal damage to property and could face up to two years in prison if found guilty.
With a busy election year ahead, the parish council unanimously voted in Cheryl Milburn to lead the way. She's been with the office for almost 37 years.
"To see all of them support me, I could not express what it meant to me," Milburn said.
She was nominated by St. Landry Parish President Bill Fontenot. He says Milburn was the clear cut replacement and looks forward to what she brings to the table
"She's a real workhorse and she knows the business. And like she said in her presentation tonight, she's done it for 37 years. So, it couldn't be in better hands. They have a real efficient team there in the registrar of voters. Miss Cheryl's going to handle it just fine," President Fontenot said.
Milburn worked alongside Moreau as his Chief Deputy Registrar. She says they spoke about what happened, and also says she owes a much of her knowledge and training to him.
"He's a pillar to me because he taught all of us what we know. I started with his mom, but he was my finish. Super person, and this moment is kind of bittersweet," Milburn said.
Now, Milburn and her team are looking to the future.
"We're trying to finish up another project and then we'll start on the canvas, and start getting ready for the April election," Milburn said.
