OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - The St. Landry Parish School Board Finance Committee has unanimously recommended the district declare a financial emergency called an exigency for a second straight year.
The Advocate reports that recommendation came Monday after an accounting firm hired by the Louisiana Department of Education said the district is apparently moving in the right direction in an effort to improve a general fund deficit estimated to be $1.6 million for the fiscal year that ended Saturday.
A fiscal exigency means the district will have more flexibility to make whatever budgetary decisions are necessary, such as downsizing staff and consolidating programs.
The entire school board is scheduled to meet July 12 to consider the committee's recommendations.
