St. John to spend federal money on housing repairs

Officials in St. John the Baptist Parish are proposing to use $32.6 million in federal grant money largely to repair homes damaged by last year's Hurricane Isaac, help with rehabilitating affordable housing units and assist low-and-moderate-income home buyers.
Another large chunk of the money would go toward repairs at two storm-battered schools.
The Parish Council plans to hold a hearing Tuesday night to gather feedback on the plan for the money, which comes from a federal Community Development Block Grant awarded through the state Office of Community Development.
About 7,000 homes in LaPlace flooded during the storm, and only 30 percent of the city's 30,000 residents had flood insurance.
