The St. James Parish Council has voted to initiate a $3 monthly fee to fund a parish-wide nuisance mosquito spraying program.
The parish already has a mosquito surveillance program to track the number of insects carrying diseases such as West Nile virus, but officials plan to use truck-mounted sprayers filled with larvicide and adulticide to kill nuisance mosquitoes.
Parish officials tell The Advocate the $308,000 program will be funded with a monthly $3 water meter connection fee and with savings from the reduction in the parish's contract with its solid waste collection provider, Waste Management of Louisiana.
The parish council approved the fee proposal on a 5-1 vote on Wednesday.
