St. Helena hires legal expert to craft new sex law

GREENSBURG, La. (AP) - The St. Helena Parish Police Jury has hired Scott Bergthold, a Chattanooga, Tenn.-based lawyer whose practice specializes in helping local governments draft laws that regulate adult businesses.

Police Jury Vice President Thomas Wicker tells The Advocate Bergthold was recommended to the police jury by the Moral Alliance of St. Helena, a group formed earlier this year to address the parish's moral problems.

Benfield worked with the city of Kenner when Bergthold helped its council craft anti-nudity ordinances in 2009 or 2010. He also helped Ascension Parish craft ordinances to regulate sexually-oriented businesses in 2002.

Wicker said the police jury authorized paying Bergthold's firm $4,500 to review the parish's ordinances and then write a new, more comprehensive law.
