BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) Louisiana's spring shrimp season in portions of Zone 1 east of the Mississippi River opens on Monday.

Robert Barham, secretary of the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, says the order affects Pass Manchac east of the railway bridge, Lake Pontchartrain, Rigoletes Pass, Chef Menteur Pass, Lake Borgne and the portion of the Mississippi Sound north of the Biloxi Marsh.

Barham says field reports indicate that 50 percent or more of the brown shrimp crop in these waters will average larger than 100 count per pound. To date, he says, there have been no confirmed reports of oil from the massive spill in the Gulf of Mexico in these areas.

The season opens effective at 6 a.m. May 31.
