Early this morning, just before 6:30 a.m., Louisiana State Police responded to a two vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 12 about 2 ½ miles west of DeQuincy that claimed the life of a DeQuincy man.
Officers suspect a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by 22-year-old Jacob Louis Dietz of DeQuincy, was traveling east on LA 12 at a high rate of speed when Dietz attempted to pass another vehicle. As Dietz began to pass the other vehicle, his vehicle struck the rear of the other vehicle causing him to lose control. The Cobalt Dietz was driving traveled off the roadway and struck a tree causing severe damage to the car. The other vehicle sustained minor damage.
Due to the severity of the crash, Dietz was pronounced dead at the scene despite the fact that he was wearing a seat belt. The driver of the other vehicle, who was also wearing a seat belt, was not injured.
Impairment on the part of Dietz is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers. The crash remains under investigation.
