BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - As the Coast Guard burns oil from a
spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana opens a special shrimp
season so trawlers can get to work before oil reaches the coast.
The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says parts of Breton
and Chandeleur sounds known as the double-rig line opened at 6 p.m.
Wednesday and will remain open to white shrimp harvesting until
Kyle Plotkin, a spokesman for Gov. Bobby Jindal, says fisheries
biologists have found numerous white shrimp in those areas. He says
the department wants to let shrimpers "harvest this marketable
crop before the potential impact of the oil spill."
He says department Secretary Robert Barham consulted with key
fishing leaders and fisheries biologists before opening the special
