Special Olympics Louisiana - Acadiana Area will host their annual shrimp boil at Girard Park March 17. Tickets are $10 for a pound of headless shrimp with potatoes and corn. In addition, there will be hot dogs for sale.
This is the only significant fundraiser they do all year long. The organization serves approximately 1,400 athletes in an eight parish area. All of the money raised stays in Acadiana and is used exclusively to allow athletes to compete in local, regional, state and national competitions at no cost to themselves or their coaches. The athletes compete in bowling, volleyball, track and field and basketball among other sports.
Besides fundraising, their biggest need is coaches, not to organize and train the teams, but to escort athletes to the competitions. There are STRICT 5:1 (maximum) athlete to coach ratio, so volunteers are needed to simply travel with the athletes and make sure that everything is taken care of. Coaches travel at no cost.
