HAMMOND, La. (AP) - Louisiana's Special Olympics summer games
will be held Saturday and Sunday at Southeastern Louisiana
University, with opening ceremonies Friday.
More than 700 athletes will participate.
As part of the program, athletes can get free vision, physical
therapy and dental screenings on Saturday. Vision and physical
therapy screenings are in one building, the "Special Olympics,
Special Smiles" dental program in another.
About 30 dentists, oral surgeons, students and alumni from LSU
Health Sciences Centers are dental volunteers. Their program
includes teaching brushing and flossing techniques and making mouth
guards for the athletes.
Athletes who need follow-up dental services will be referred to
professionals in their areas.
