MADRID (AP) - Authorities say they have arrested a man in Barcelona suspected of being a dangerous leading member of the Italian Calabrian mafia.

The announcement was made Wednesday by the regional police in northeastern Catalonia, who were working in collaboration with Italian counterparts.

The suspected mobster, Carmelo Gallico, 46, is believed to be the head of a clan belonging the 'Ndrangheta, a powerful criminal organization in Italy.

Gallico is suspected of murder, extortion and money laundering and was arrested Dec. 23 while on the run since the arrest of several other clan members.

Police say a complex surveillance operation that began in November helped nab Gallico. The judiciary has begun extradition proceedings.
