PINEVILLE, La. (AP) The body of a Pineville man who drowned while trying to swim across the Red River was found by searchers aided by sonar.

The Town Talk reported on Saturday that the body was found Friday night.

The victim, Edward Gordon Jr., 36, had been fishing with a relative Thursday evening at a spot on the Alexandria side of the river, officials and family members said.

Gordon and his relative had been discussing whether they could swim from one side of the river to the other when Gordon followed through with an attempt.

Witnesses said Gordon made it within about 50 feet of the Pineville bank when he went under and did not resurface.
