Some landowners can get help starting bird habitats

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Agricultural producers in 22 parishes may be eligible for financial assistance to create bird habitat on their land.

A news release from Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service is offering technical and financial assistance to agricultural producers in portions of 22 parishes to develop and enhance habitat for migrating birds.

Ducks Unlimited is partnering with NRCS on the program.

Strain said interested landowners should visit their local NRCS office soon because the application deadline is May 18.

Parishes that have eligible areas include Acadia, Allen, Assumption, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Evangeline, Iberia, Iberville, Jefferson, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, Lafourche, Plaquemines, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, Terrebonne and Vermilion.
