OPELOUSAS, LA. - As a result of the January 31 Social Media Class supported by the St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission and Opelousas Chamber of Commerce, local business owners are invited to a monthly meetup to discuss social media strategies, tactics, and other marketing ideas. The first meet up will be held at Java Square on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 10 a.m. and monthly thereafter.
Several businesses have taken advantage of the program to pair up with St. Landry Parish high school students to advise them on campaigns and the how-to of social media channels. Students are mentored by Dionne Davis Green, who is part of the Business Supporting Faculty in the Department of Management at UL's B. I. Moody College of Business Administration. A St. Landry Parish native and current resident, she researches and promotes social media benefits for local businesses. The program is the second round of the Louisiana Business Challenge, a competition in which Beau Chene High School (BCHS) seniors beat more than 60 other teams to win the BP-sponsored event. The BCHS students claimed more than $19,000 in scholarship money.
