SMSO warning residents of a scam

St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office is warning residents of possible scam.
The complaint received by the SMSO claims to have received phone call from a foreign area code. The caller directed the target of the scam to purchase gift cards from a retail store and mail them out of state to claim a sweepstakes prize. In addition to this complaint, the SMPSO has received reports of similar phone scams occurring in the area.
SMSO warns citizens that no legitimate sweepstakes will require payment to collect winnings and if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. We encourage
everyone to share this information with friends and family so that no one falls victim to these
scams.
