Smoothie World owner evaluated after Thursday night standoff with deputies

Tai Nguyen, the owner of Smoothie World who armed himself with 3 Samurai style knives and posted erratic messages on Facebook, is being evaluated at University Medical Center. "He is being treated for non-medical issues," Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office spokesperson Capt. Kip Judice said.

Nguyen was taken to UMC after a standoff Thursday night with deputies. Just before 8:00, employees at Smoothie World at 2800 Verot School Rd. called police saying their boss was acting erratic and armed with knives. "The Sheriff's Office is continuing the investigation to determine what criminal charges may apply," Judice said.

Deputies said when they arrived Nguyen had already left the store but came back as deputies were talking to employees. Nguyen then got back in his car, drove around to the back of the building then returned to the front of his business and ran inside and locked himself inside with employees. The employees were released soon after. While inside his store, Nguyen posted erratic messages on his Facebook page.

Deputies entered the building after a co-owner gave them a key, and after 45 minutes of negotiations, Nguyen agreed to leave, "but as deputies approached him he became combative and resisted the deputies," Judice said. Nguyen received minor injuries. No one else was injured.
