SLCC to offer Summer camps

South Louisiana Community College will be offering a variety of camps this summer on three of its campuses. Each camp is one week in duration and is from 8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Cost is $99 per camper and includes a t-shirt and snacks.

2014 Summer Camps include:

STEMtastic Science Camp: Campers will learn basic engineering practices to create solutions to problems presented to them. One example: design and create an effective and efficient packaging system and a creative label for a single potato chip. The packaging must sustain a three-foot drop test as well as a toss test. The single potato chip must also survive the mail as it will be shipped to a specified address. Projects will be judged on weight of package, cost of materials, and condition of the potato chip. Camps will be offered on the Lafayette campus (Ardoin building) starting the week of June 9 and on the New Iberia campus (Teche building) starting the week of June 23. The camps are for students going to sixth grade through eighth grade.

Zombie Run Health Camp: Campers will learn basic first aid and CPR to properly diagnose zombies that have invaded campus. Students will learn how to treat cuts, burns, broken bones, and infections. They will also set up triage stations to treat zombies with various ailments. They must correctly treat the ailment or else be infected and turn into a zombie. This camp will be held on the T.H. Harris campus in Opelousas the week beginning June 2. The camp is for students going to ninth and tenth grades.

Automotive Camp: Campers will learn how to change the oil in their cars, balance tires, conduct tune ups, and change brake pads. And, they can work on their own cars. This camp will be held on the Lafayette campus (Ardoin building) the week of June 30. Campers should be students going to the eleventh and twelfth grades.

Information Technology Camp: Campers will learn the basics of video game design. During the week, they will design their own video game. This camp will be held on the Lafayette campus (Ardoin building) beginning the week of June 16. This camp is for students going to the ninth and tenth grades.
