A single-vehicle accident on I-10 Friday claimed the life of an Abbeville man.
Louisiana State Troopers cleared the fatal crash on eastbound I-10 near LA 77 in Iberville Parish, a collision that resulted in miles of viewer-reported traffic delays as far back as Whiskey Bay on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.
Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop tell KATC they began investigating, about 10 a.m., the single vehicle collision that killed 58-year-old Michael R. Flournoy of Abbeville.
The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Flournoy was driving a 2007 Nissan Titan pickup eastbound on I-10. Flournoy's Nissan inexplicably ran off the roadway to the right and struck a tree on the driver's side door.
Rain was falling at the time of the collision and it is not known if weather was a factor in the crash.
Flournoy sustained fatal injuries in the crash despite the fact that he was restrained by a safety belt. Although troopers say that driver impairment is not suspected, LSP did take a toxicology sample from the victim and submitted it to its Crime Lab for analysis.
