BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) State wildlife and fisheries officials say shrimp season in a part of the state's outside waters will reopen next week.
Wildlife Secretary Robert Barham says the area, commonly known by harvesters as the "three mile," is set to reopen on April 21 at 6 a.m.
State biologists say small white shrimp are no longer present in the area. Significant numbers of small, white shrimp remain in state waters west of the Atchafalaya River Ship Channel to the western shore of Freshwater Bayou Canal. That area will remain closed until further notice.
The opening dates for the 2010 spring inshore shrimp season will be considered by the wildlife and fisheries commission at its May 6 meeting.
