SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A 22-year-old Shreveport man has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing his infant son.

Grady Thornton was convicted last week of second-degree murder for the killing of his 3-month-old son, Terrell. The Times (http://bit.ly/y20Pni ) reported that Thornton was sentenced Monday after state District Judge Scott Crichton denied a defense motion to convict him of negligent homicide.

The child was brought to a hospital on June 24, 2008, and died the next day.

Police said Thornton admitted he struck the boy in the head because the infant was crying - and squeezed the boy's head hard until he stopped crying.

An autopsy found the victim had a skull fracture and other injuries tied to being shaken.
