SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Shreveport has recorded the same number of homicides as it did last year.

The Dec. 21 killing of Larry Patterson brought this year's homicide count to 20, matching 2011's total and 10 less killings than occurred in 2010.

The last two years' numbers represent the lowest yearly totals since 1976, when 27 people were killed in the city.

The Times reports (http://bit.ly/Wg3Fok ) Shreveport averaged about two homicides per month, with September being the deadliest - claiming four lives. Three of those murders - all male victims - happened between September 8 and 12.

The city last recorded few as 20 homicides in 1967. By the 1970s, the number of annual homicides was in the 30s. By the 1980s, homicides ranged from 30 to 55 annually.
