FAYETTE, Miss. (AP) - A pair of Jefferson County sheriff's deputies escaped without injury after being shot by suspects who fled.

Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker says deputies MacArthur Doss and Derrick Stampley gave chase Sunday night in separate vehicles to an SUV that was driving erratic in excess of 100 miles per hour. The vehicle traveled east on Mississippi 28 near Fayette.

After it stopped, Walker told the Natchez Democrat three or four people fled the vehicle.

Chris Morgan remained in the vehicle and was arrested.

Walker says while deputies were talking to Morgan at least three or four shots were fired at them. One of their cars was hit.

Walker said the sheriff's office has a few suspects but would not release the names.
