Serious Injury Crash North bound US Hwy 171

A crash caused by a flat tire involved two vehicles killed one man, and injured several others in Calcasieu Parish Sunday night.

According to Louisiana State Troopers, the crash occurred on US Hwy 171 (north bound) bridge around 7:00pm. The crash involved a 2006 Chevrolet van, driven by 36 year old Leyla Austin of Lake Charles, and a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by 25 year old Megan L. Schexnider of Lake Charles. The Chevrolet was north bound on the highway when the flat tire was noticed, and caused Austin to pull over. 44 year old Vincent D. Austin of Lake Charles, a passenger in the Chevrolet, exited the vehicle and attempted to remove a spare tire from the rear when the north bound Hyundai collided with him and the vehicle.

Leyla Austin was wearing her seat belt and received moderate injuries. She was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. Vincent Austin was pronounced dead on the scene.

A thirteen year old girl, inside Leyla Austin's vehicle, was wearing her seat belt and received serious injuries. She was transported to Saint Patrick's Hospital.

Schexnider was wearing her seatbelt and received moderate injuries. She was transported to Women and Children's Hospital.

Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.
