Seafood Sales Rise With The Start Of Lent

Restaurants all over town are adding fish to their menus to accommodate the Lenten crowds. They have more people on staff and employees coming in at 5 a.m. to prep. With Lent comes the sacrifice of meat, but bring on anything from the water.

Family owned places like Olde Tyme Grocery and South Side Bakery were packed with lines out the door. "Our biggest selling item is always shrimp but during Lent it gets even crazier. We'll go through in an average week about 1400 to 1500 pounds," said General Manager Scott Mordant.

During Lent, many practicing Catholics give up meat on Fridays. It lasts through Easter Sunday. For many in Acadiana it's not that big of a sacrifice because seafood is always on the menu. "I guess in the south it's not really that big of a deal, but it's a good thing to do. It makes you stop and think," said Lafayette resident Josh Hargrave. "We eat seafood anyway, but I think it's more of a tradition now. On Friday nights, we get together, eat seafood buffets and things like that," said Lafayette Resident Scott Domingue.

So, whether it's a crab burger or a po-boy, it's not forbidden for Catholics following the rules.
