Scott Middle School student Damien Handy Jr. was eliminated from the National Spelling Bee today when he misspelled "mussitation" in the third round.
Handy is a seventh-grader and was one of 281 students competing in the spelling bee this year. Instead of spelling "mussitation," Handy spelled "muscitation."
Finals will be Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Kiwanis Club of Lafayette and Kiwanis Club of Acadiana chose to sponsor his expense-paid trip after Handy won a regional spelling bee. Every year, the club sponsors a student to compete in the National Spelling Bee.
Handy spent the morning with the GMA crew on May 20 before heading to Washington D.C. for national contest. The video is connected to this story.
