On April 27, 2013 students from The Berchmans Academy of the Sacred Heart and The Academy of the Sacred Heart competed in the Canstruction event at Festival International de Louisiane.
The gentlemen of Berchmans Academy took first place in the People's Choice award with their design, We're Not in CANsas Anymore, complete with tornado. The group raised over $11,000 for the Second Harvest Food Bank. They also claimed the 2nd place Best Overall prize. The team was made up of 10th grade students, Blaise Broussard (captain); Joseph Aubert; Jacob Moreau; Seth Mouton; and 9th grade student, Alton Stoute.
The Academy team won the 2nd place People's Choice award raising over $7,000 for Second Harvest Food Bank. The team also won the Best Use of Label Award. The Academy team included: Raven Bouvier (captain), Kate Edwards, and Theresa Zaunbrecher (11th grade students), Lelia Saucier (10th grade student) , and Sophia Deng (9th grade student).
This year's competition was the first to be held outdoors, so the teams overcame many challenges including rain and high winds to complete their designs. There were even moments when passersby and parents tried to help in their plight. They all agree they learned a great deal, especially about teamwork, perseverance and flexibility. As Academy student Raven Bouvier said, "Personally, I felt that it was so perfect that we all worked together to achieve the final goal, and I know we were all very grateful for the help. The whole day seemed to embody what Sacred Heart is about: a community coming together to help others."
