OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - The Fiscal Review Committee has decided the state will continue to monitor the St. Landry Parish School System's finances, but it will not appoint a state fiscal adviser to take control of the situation.

The Daily World reports the committee was satisfied with the school board's recently passed plan to reduce spending by increasing employee health insurance contributions, eliminating positions and employees, slashing substitute teachers and ending the school year three days early, among other things.

School officials were in Baton Rouge Monday to present the committee with a plan detailing how it will cut costs and avoid a deficit. If it were to make no changes, the system would find itself $4 million in the red by July and with an $8 million deficit by December.
