School placed on lockdown on the first day of school

A Morgan City school was temporarily placed on lock down today after a foot pursuit of a suspect led officers near the school.

According to police, at 11:12 a.m., on the first day of school in St. Mary Parish, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle when the suspect fled. The suspect exited the vehicle and led officers on a foot pursuit near J.B. Maitland Elementary School.

As a precaution, the school was momentarily placed on a lock down as officers searched the area for the suspect.

Officers declared the area safe and the lock down was lifted, according to police. The lock down lasted approximately 20-30 minutes.

The suspect was not apprehended, however officers are still investigating the incident and attempting to locate the suspect.
