School bus driver tenure bill gets final passage

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - New Louisiana school bus drivers will no longer be able to reach the job protection status called tenure, under a bill given final passage Monday.
Currently, school bus drivers have a probationary term of three years. If they are not dismissed or found unsatisfactory during that time, they reach tenure, which gives them a permanent job status and makes it harder for them to be fired.
Louisiana is in the only state in the nation that has tenure for bus drivers.
The measure (House Bill 293) by Rep. Joe Harrison, R-Napoleonville, will remove tenure for any bus drivers hired after July 1. It won't take away tenure for bus drivers who already have it.
The House voted 67-30 for the measure, and the Senate voted 20-15. Approval sent the bill to the governor's desk.
