School board eliminates funding for questionable hire

The school board voted 5-4 tonight to eliminate the budget line item that funds Superintendent Pat Cooper's special assistant, effectively eliminating Thad Welch's position.

But superintendent Pat Cooper says he is the only person who can hire and fire employees, so Welch will come to work tomorrow and they will figure out how to pay him.

Welch has caused controversy recently. He is paid $76,000 even though he does not have a high school degree, which is required in his job description.

Those voting for the elimination were Tommy Angelle, Rae Trahan, Tehmi Chassion, Greg Awbrey and Mark Babineaux. Kermit Bouillion, Mark Cockerham, Shelton Cobb and Hunter Beasley voted against.

The item originally was scheduled to be addressed in a closed session, but Chassion said that was a mistake. The item was brought up in public session
